Rookie Phenom Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates Chosen by Torey Lovullo to Start Midsummer Classic for the National League; Bruce Bochy Selects Four-Time All-Star Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles to Start For the American League

Arlington, TX – Earlier today, the 2024 All-Star Game managers, Bruce Bochy of the American League and Torey Lovullo of the National League, announced their starting lineups for Baseball’s 94th Midsummer Classic, to be played on Tuesday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The lineups were announced at this afternoon’s 2024
All-Star Game Press Conference, which was carried live by MLB Network.

Bochy’s AL lineup will be:

Bochy has selected right-handed pitcher Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles as the AL’s starting pitcher. This marks the first career Midsummer Classic start for the four-time All-Star. The 29-year-old will become the fifth different Orioles pitcher (eighth time) to start the Midsummer Classic, and the first since Steve Stone started the All-Star Game during his 1980 Cy Young Award-winning season. Other Orioles hurlers to start the Midsummer Classic include Jerry Walker (1959); Milt Pappas (1965); and Hall of Famer Jim Palmer (1970, 1972, 1977, 1978). In 19 starts on the season, Burnes is 9-4 with a 2.43 ERA. In 118.2 innings, the 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner has allowed just 37 runs (32 earned) on 99 hits with 25 walks and 110 strikeouts. The 2.43 ERA for Burnes is the lowest for an Orioles pitcher through his first 19 starts of a season since Palmer had a 2.31 ERA through 19 starts in 1978. In addition, it marks the lowest for any pitcher through the first 19 career starts with Baltimore in team history (since 1954).

Lovullo’s NL lineup will be:

Lovullo has chosen Pittsburgh Pirates rookie right-hander Paul Skenes as the NL’s starting pitcher. The 22-year-old will become the fifth rookie pitcher in history to start the Midsummer Classic, and the first since Hideo Nomo of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995. Other rookie hurlers to start the All-Star Game include Washington’s Dave Stenhouse (1962 – Game 2); Detroit’s Mark Fidrych (1976); and Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers (1981). Skenes, who is the first player to be selected an All-Star in the season after being drafted, will become the sixth-youngest pitcher to start the All-Star Game at 22 years and 48 days old, trailing only Baltimore’s Jerry Walker (20.172 in 1959); Valenzuela (20.281 in 1981); Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets (21.241 in 1986); Fidrych (21.334 in 1976); and Oakland’s Vida Blue (21.350 in 1971). In 11 starts to begin his career, the California native is 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA. In 66.1 innings pitched, he has allowed 14 runs on 48 hits with 13 walks and 89 strikeouts. Skenes will become the fifth different pitcher in Pirates history to start the Midsummer Classic (sixth time overall), joining Bob Friend (1956, 1960 – Game 1); Vern Law (1960 – Game 2); Dock Ellis (1971); and Jerry Reuss (1975).
